I wrote in my previous review that a television series made me want to read One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Well, it happened again with The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende. I watched the Amazon Prime series recently and the visual representation of Allende’s most well-known novel got me to read it again.

The story of the Trueba family living in an unnamed South American country, likely Chile, Allende’s birthplace, is told in The House of the Spirits. Esteban Trueba is the stubborn head of the family determined to dominate and own his clairvoyant and mystical wife, Clara. Furthermore, he aims to rule over his children (Blanca, Jaime, & Nicolas) and grandchildren (Alba) according to the customs of a man of his period and social standing.

As readers, we witness the family’s ascent and decline through Esteban’s wealth as a landowner and his political ambitions culminating in becoming a Senator. Esteban’s stubbornness contributes to political turmoil in the country and leads to unresolvable conflicts within the family. Allende’s masterful storytelling weaves together the supernatural, politics, and family dynamics into a potent mix that has fascinated readers for over forty years.

I will state that I believe the book’s title is somewhat misleading since the Trueba family homes in the city and countryside do not serve as characters in the story, unlike the house in One Hundred Years of Solitude, the novel to which it is most often compared. Even with that concern, I will highly recommend The House of the Spirits. It is probably the finest debut novel by an author I have ever read and marks the beginning of Allende’s remarkable career. For fans of magical realism, The House of the Spirits is a must-read.
