Wisdom of Marion 2:8: One Body But Many Roles

“For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.

For the body does not consist of one member but of many. But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, yet one body.”

(1 Corinthians 12:12-14; 18-20 ESV Bible)

I was listening to a sermon this morning by my pastor from several months ago.  He was talking about every member at church is a minister, not just the pastor.

And as he was preaching, the above section of scripture from 1 Corinthians came to mind.  I believe in our church today…we have either implicitly or explicitly seem to present that if you are not a pastor, elder or a Christian celebrity your role in the body of Christ is diminished or even ignored.

While, the Bible completely disagrees with that kind of thinking.  I have to remind myself of that from time to time.  We all have a role from doctor to plumber, lawyer to teacher, parent to politician….it doesn’t matter what your position is in society,  if you believe in Christ as your Lord and Savior, he will use your gifts and talents in a fashion to suit His purposes and glorify God.

It was good to hear that sermon and I hope we are reminded that God does not look at what we are in society but looks at who we are in His eyes.
