Wisdom From Kammbia 2:26: The Colorado Tragedy Is Not A Time For Politics

by | Jul 22, 2012 | Wisdom From Kammbia Column | 2 comments

First of all, my thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of Aurora, Colorado this weekend.  I believe many of those people were looking to enjoy a movie and return to their homes later that evening.  But for their life end like that should all give us pause.  And time to reflect at how precious life is and how easily it can end for all us.

However, one of the most disturbing aspects, I’m reading and hearing from this tragedy is that both sides of political spectrum are politicizing it to make cheap political points.  I know….what a shocker.  But, there are things in life that are bigger than politics and using a tragedy is inappropriate at best and repulsive at worst.

Here’s an issue that shows me what is it really about.

There was a seventeen year old boy who called into to the Dennis Prager radio show on Friday about the tragedy.  He asked Mr. Prager why should we care about people we don’t know.  It was shame that they died but he didn’t know those people and should not have any reason to care about them.

Wow!!!

To Dennis’ credit, he didn’t get outraged or even admonished the boy for his earnest question.  Dennis explained why we should care for our fellow human beings even if they are a stranger.  I must admit I would not have handled that call as gracefully as Mr. Prager did.

But the question that teenager asked has bothered me all weekend.  Why should we care for our fellow human beings?  Unfortunately, there are people in this world who will treat their animals better than people.  Sorry, I’m not anti-animal.  But that’s a fact.

For a teenager, who has not matured and fully developed into a man to be okay with being heartless is deeply troubling.

So no matter if there were the strictest gun control laws throughout America or that every person should have the right to own a gun would not change the fact of people’s inhumane behavior towards another human being.

People are afraid to look at that and realize the capacity of evil in our own hearts.  No matter how many laws we create, people will find a way hurt each other in unexplicable ways.

“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?”

And he said to him, “YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.”

This is the great and foremost commandment.

The second is like it, “YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.”

On these two commandments depend the Whole Law and the Prophets.”  {Matthew 22:36-40 NASB}

I wanted to end this note with those popular verses of scripture from the Book of Matthew.  While there are many people who still have trouble with that first commandment.  However, as human beings we all should learn and try to follow that second commandment.

And until we do….we will never face the real issue that causes tragedies like the one in Aurora, Colorado.

They say the guy did it to get fame. I can’t begin to wrap my head around how someone can want fame so much that their willing to kill innocent people for it. There are other ways out there to be known for besides killing 12 people. I can’t imagine the pain that all those family’s are feeling. The youngest victim was 6, why would someone be willing to kill a 6 year old child for fame. It’s just not worth it to me. The guy needs to fry.

      Wow, Samtee2222!

I didn’t hear that. I haven’t been watching the news that closely.

      Unbelievable.

      Thanks for your comments.
